From The Pitch To The Sports Hall: Former Professional Footballer, Aileen Whelan Empowers At Hayfield Cross Primary School
On Wednesday 20th November, the Mintridge team were welcomed back to Hayfield Cross Primary School for the second time this month – this time with former Women’s Super League player and true inspiration, Aileen Whelan.
Aileen ran through her footballing career showing a video of some of her goals, to lots of cheering from the students. She stressed the importance of education which enabled her to have a career path once she’d retired from football. A Q&A session followed.
Years 3 and 5 then had a coaching session with Aileen in the hall (to avoid the freezing temperatures outside) with some games and a relay race at the end. Competitive spirits certainly shone through and medals were given to two students in each session.
After the coaching sessions, two students were then introduced to Aileen having been selected for a 6 month mentoring programme and we cannot wait to follow their progress!
Our One-to-one remote mentoring programme is to ensure the greatest legacy of our athlete visits. For six months Aileen will offer continued support for student mental and physical fitness (delivered via safeguarded technology) and to ensure that a long, healthy and balanced relationship with sport is maintained. BRING IT ON!
