FIL KAMPS RETURNS TO WOODSTON PRIMARY SCHOOL TO LEAD UNFORGETTABLE DEAF FOOTBALL SESSIONS TO STUDENTS
On Tuesday 25th March, we had another wonderful visit to Woodston Primary School – this time they welcomed back Deaflympian Fil Kamps who had previously attended in July 2024. It was the turn of Year 3 for some football fun with Fil on the day.
After a brief introduction, Fil carried out three coaching sessions on the field during the morning with warm ups including Turtles and Sharks which is ALWAYS a winner. The sessions then continued with the students wearing ear defenders which focussed everyone. They had to concentrate on British Sign Language rather than verbal instructions.
During the lunch break, Fil went outside for a mixture of football and basketball with some of the students, and plenty of high fives with the Mintridge ‘foam hand’! There’s never any stopping Fil!
The afternoon session was with the deaf students which was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Sports role models inspire thousands of people who follow their quest to achieve, win and overcome obstacles. Young people can see and understand what they do and are likely to emulate them (whatever their behaviour). They are able to highlight that they might be outstanding in sport, they might not be perfect in every other respect. They show their weaknesses and vulnerabilities too. They are human and they are self aware. Our Ambassadors highlight that we are all unique. We have unique strengths and fallibilities. The more relatable and mirrored the “hero” is, the stronger the connection and this is why this final session is incredibly important for the deaf students to see what Fil has gone onto achieve for England & GB Deaf teams.
All the sessions ended with photos and autograph cards, along with medals and certificates for the lucky students that stood out in the sessions.
Thank you once again Woodston for welcoming Team Mintridge back for what was another enjoyable and memorable day.
