Eboni Usoro-Brown mentors students from Caroline Chisholm School and Northampton International Academy during an inspirational St James's Place Foundation mentoring programme
Working your way through secondary school and managing the pressures associated with school, sport, exams and your social groups can be tough. However, when you have a mentor like Eboni Usoro-Brown supporting you through those tough times and sharing her words of wisdom from on and off the court, it makes some of those pressures a lot easier to manage. This is exactly what happened for Eboni’s two mentees during their St James’s Place Charitable Foundation supported programme.
Over the last six months, Eboni has spent some time with her mentees who were nominated by their schools, to take part in this mentoring Programme that was very kindly donated by the St James’s Place Charitable Foundation.
The two mentees were selected to take part in the programme so that Eboni could help support them with their netball, academic studies and personal lives. Eboni’s two mentees have been logging in to join their calls with her, every fortnight for the last six months, even during Eboni’s time in Australia and have made huge improvements towards their own goals and aspirations.
Eboni’s mentee from Caroline Chisholm School said that the programme really supported her with her confidence and she loved working with Eboni during the programme. Eboni spent a lot of time with both of her mentees talking about how they can reach their goals and aspirations and how they can manage their time effectively. Along with this, they talked a lot about sport specific topics like fitness and nutrition, netball specific skills and drills and how to create a positive growth mindset when dealing with pressure at a competition.
Eboni’s mentee from Northampton International Academy spent some time speaking to Eboni about the pressures of her academic studies and how she is progressing with those in the lead-up to her exams. Eboni spoke to her about the need to be disciplined and set time aside for the most important things in your day.
Throughout the programme, Eboni has drawn on her own experience, not only as an England netball player but from her role as someone who has worked alongside a professional international career as a lawyer. Eboni spoke about how those organisation skills, experience working within a team and ability to set goals and stick to specific targets, can be applied and learned by her mentees too.
Eboni has helped to develop her mentee’s confidence and resilience during their programme and inspired them to think about how they reach the goals that they have set out for themselves.
At The Mintridge Foundation, we believe that everyone should have the opportunity to hear the stories and experience the power of our exceptional Mintridge role models. We know that having a role model who can support you, influence you and offer you advice that can help you on your own journey and pathway, can be extremely beneficial. We are pleased that these two mentees could take part in this extra special St James’s Place Charitable Foundation supported programme and could benefit from Eboni’s experience and knowledge. We know that hearing the words of advice from someone that has already successfully made it through the pathway that you are trying to follow, can boost your mindset and attitude towards future challenges, help you bounce back from setbacks and also help you to understand that sometimes those journeys aren’t the smoothest and that you should never give up!
Thank you again to the St James’s Place Charitable Foundation for supporting this programme and enabling these two schools, their students and these two mentees to benefit from this brilliant mentoring programme.
