The Wilson Foundation support a brilliant javelin programme with Commonwealth Games competitor Joe Harris at Corby Technical School

“Work hard in silence and let your success make the noise!”

Joe Harris shares his favourite quote with the students at Corby Techincal School during our Bronze Athletics Programme supported by The Wilson Foundation

It was an exciting day for all the students at Corby Technical School who were joining us for a day of javelin with Commonwealth Games competitor, Joe Harris for our brilliant Bronze Programme, which was kindly funded by The Wilson Foundation.

Team Mintridge were delighted to be working with the staff and students at Corby Technical School as we had the pleasure of delivering a fun and very inspirational programme for the students, to inspire them to be the best they possibly can be, as well as sharing some top javelin tips with them from the master of javelin himself, Joe Harris.

With the weather setting a few of its own challenges, Joe welcomed the students to the sports hall during the morning to take on some fundamental javelin movements and activities to work on their basic skills that he would regularly do when competing for Great Britain.

When the sun finally made an appearance Joe took the students outside to show them his personal best javelin throw and give them an opportunity to enhance their skills and throwing distances with his help and guidance. The students really enjoyed working with Joe during their sessions and improved so much in a short space of time. We were delighted that one of the students was also chosen to represent the school at the athletics competition after his afternoon with Joe and epic javelin throw!

As part of each session, Joe handed out signed autograph cards for the students to remember their time with him and selected some students to receive a goody bag and certificate for their efforts, which included a packet of nibble.

During our visit, Joe shared snippets of his career in javelin and how he got into the sport at a later stage in his life but the skills he has gained through taking part in other sports has been incredibly useful for him, which is something that was valuable for the students to hear. Joe also shared some of his top tips for success with the students and some key things he has learnt along his journey to success, which helped them understand more about how they can balance their academic work and sport at the same time as well as the resilience and determination that is needed to succeed at what you do.

The students all took their opportunity to ask Joe any questions they had. Some of the best questions were:

How long is the javelin?

What did you have to do when you were injured?

Where do you keep the javelins?

How many hours a week do you train?

What is your nutrition like and how much do you eat?

Why did you choose to get involved in javelin?

Do you have to be strong to take part in javelin or is it just having good technique?

Will you go to an Olympics?

What is your favourite memory?

Joe and Team Mintridge really enjoyed our day at Corby Technical School. We are so pleased to be able to work with them as part of this very special programme supported by The Wilson Foundation, that have helped us inspire the next generation of young people to perform at their best in whatever they go on to do.

Thank you very much to the staff and students at Corby Technical School and the students for welcoming us for a brilliant day of javelin!

We provide a support network for young people by harnessing the power of positive sporting role models. The Mintridge Foundation assists young people of all ages, abilities and physical capabilities to develop confidence and resilience, and creates awareness of the importance of mental and physical wellbeing through sport.

Our team of Ambassadors  - Olympians, Paralympians and other professional sports stars from over 20 sports, both team and individual - work with young people in schools, clubs and academies across the UK. Starting with visits including assemblies, coaching clinics and classroom sessions tailored to each organisation’s requirements, our ambassadors can then provide one- on- one remote mentoring in a safeguarded environment, delivered via technology to build a lasting legacy for individuals.

The Mintridge Foundation’s successes demonstrate the incredible power of sport; from a mentee’s selection to represent Great Britain in their chosen field to enabling disabled children to find confidence and happiness just through participation. Understanding life after sport, we also support our Ambassadors in their transition from active sport to the next stage of their careers.
