Mentees gain valuable support from former GB wheelchair basketballer and Channel 4 News presenter Jordan Jarrett - Bryan during their Sudborough Foundation mentoring programme

The key to success is hard work, discipline, passion, and determination but most importantly – enjoyment.
— Jordan Jarrett - Bryan

Despite being in lockdown for the majority of this mentoring programme, Jordan Jarrett-Bryan has guided his two Sir Christopher Hatton Academy mentees through this pandemic and finished a brilliant mentoring journey with them, after six months of calling with each other remotely. This programme was kindly supported by The Sudborough Foundation, which supports charitable projects where a grant can really make a difference, and Jordan has certainly done that through this Silver Mentoring Programme.

Team Mintridge virtually visited Christopher Hatton Academy before Christmas last year, where Jordan presented a live presentation and Q&A with the whole school, who were in and out of school at this point. Over the last few months, the students have experienced a series of setbacks, ups and downs and uncertainty, especially at school when this is usually so constant for them. We are so pleased that The Sudborough Foundation chose to support Sir Christopher Hatton Academy with this programme, as their support has been greatly appreciated by the school and the students taking part in the mentoring programme.

Jordan has an incredible amount of knowledge, not only about Wheelchair Basketball, where he has represented Team GB but also off the court, from his experience as a presenter and journalist. In his current role, Jordan has met some incredible sporting individuals, including Jessica Ennis-Hill, Usain Bolt, Anthony Joshua, and Andy Murray. With a busy summer of sport including the Euros football tournament and the Tokyo Olympics, Jordan has been working on numerous projects which were really interesting for the mentees to learn more about.

Throughout his mentoring calls, Jordan has been echoing his thoughts and feelings on success and supporting his mentees in their own journeys, even outside of the world of sport and supporting their academic success too. Jordan believes that the key to success is, “hard work, discipline, passion, and determination but most importantly – enjoyment”, which we definitely agree with!

Jordan has worked hard with his mentees to challenge them in their own passion projects, including their ambitions on the basketball court but also encouraging the two young men to explore their creative sides. On their calls, they spent some time linking this to their own career choices and discussed how they are going to reach their goals and aspirations.

It has been so great to see the journeys these two mentees have been on during their programme with Jordan and we hope that they go on to achieve big things, with Jordan’s wise words in the back of their minds.

Jordan has really enjoyed working with his mentees on this programme and here is what he has to say about his mentees:

“Both mentees were two lovely young men who I really enjoyed mentoring. Mentee one was much more confident in speaking to me early on. He’s extremely ambitious and someone who is clearly multi-talented. He was polite and was happy to engage in jokes and a bit of banter…My second mentee took a while to warm up and took a few weeks before I noticed him feeling comfortable speaking to me. We spoke a lot about the relationships he had with friends and the issues he was having with them. With some support and finding some more positive people to be around, he seemed much happier. I enjoyed speaking to my second mentee and he wrote several short stories that we talked through. He was clearly creative.”

We have really enjoyed following these two mentees on their mentoring journey and we know that they will go on to achieve great things in the future. We are really grateful to The Sudborough Foundation for supporting this programme and enabling these two mentees to be supported on their own journeys by Jordan.

Thank you also to the staff at Sir Christopher Hatton Academy for supporting this programme and ensuring that their students get the most out of this wonderful opportunity that they were given.

#TeamMintridge

The Mintridge Foundation is a registered charity dedicated to enhancing life skills in young people through sport. We provide a support network for young people by harnessing the power of positive sporting role models. The Mintridge Foundation assists young people of all ages, abilities, and physical capabilities to develop confidence and resilience, and creates awareness of the importance of mental and physical wellbeing through sport.

Our team of Ambassadors - Olympians, Paralympians and other professional sports stars from over 20 sports, both team and individual - work with young people in schools, clubs and academies across the UK. Starting with visits including assemblies, coaching clinics and classroom sessions tailored to each organisation’s requirements, our ambassadors can then provide one- on- one remote mentoring in a safeguarded environment, delivered via technology such as FitSwarm and Playwaze to build a lasting legacy for individuals.

The Mintridge Foundation’s successes demonstrate the incredible power of sport; from a mentee’s selection to represent Great Britain in their chosen field to enabling disabled children to find confidence and happiness just through participation. Understanding life after sport, we also support our Ambassadors in their transition from active sport to the next stage of their careers.
