"We need to unleash the power of food and utilise it to enhance your sport and academic performance.” - Jr Nutrition gives the Wimbledon High School students some top tips on sports nutrition

Bronze Presentation Programme with JR Nutrition and the students from Wimbledon High School - October 2021

“Food serves a purpose and has its time and its place… we need to unleash the power of food and utilise it to enhance your sport and academic performance!”

We were delighted to spend the evening with JR Nutrition and the students from Wimbledon High School, as part of an amazing Bronze Programme, designed to support the sports scholars and talented athletes in their own journeys to success and inform them more about the nutritional choices they can make to enhance their own performance.

Throughout the evening, JR Nutrition shared some valuable insights with the students about what, when and why they should eat certain foods and how they will impact performance.  With a depth of experience working with professional athletes, from a number of different sports, JR Nutrition linked her knowledge of sports performance to the sports scholars and tried to demonstrate some of the timings and examples that could work well for their sports and disciplines, to help them gain a greater understating of what works best for their bodies.

It was an incredibly insightful evening for the students at Wimbledon High School, as they gained some essential top tips, words of advice and useful tools from Jr Nutrition about managing food, sport, commitments and how they can make small changes that will create influential results in their sports.

JR Nutrition shared with the students during the evening, the benefits of planning your meals but also creating a positive relationship with all foods so that they can be used at the right time, as there should not be a belief system formed around good and bad foods. With some of the sports scholars already performing at the highest level, JR Nutrition shared some top tips for ingredients they should be looking out for in their foods and how to buy smart.

We also learnt more about the power of Milk to aid recovery, so we hope the students enjoy their post-match milkshakes from now on!

“Recovery is one of the most important things you do when competing at a high level in sport, it is not just a tick box exercise, it is a lifestyle!”

Here are a couple of the questions that the students asked during the evening:

Some nutritionists don’t recommend taking supplements, can you recommend anything that I should be adding to my diet as an elite long-distance runner?

I can’t each large amounts of dairy, what would you recommend for my diet to help aid my performance?

What are the simple things I can change in my day that will help with my performance?

The students involved in the presentation engaged so well with JR Nutrition, who quizzed them on a couple of occasions about the amounts of carbohydrates and proteins in foods and some of the best options for the students before and after competitions.

It was a wonderful evening for Team Mintridge, JR Nutrition and the staff and students at Wimbledon High School. The sports scholars from Wimbledon High School took a lot from their time with JR Nutrition and we wish them all the best of luck in everything they go on to do in the future.

We look forward to being back with the sports scholars at Wimbledon High School in December with one of our inspirational sporting Ambassadors.

The Mintridge Foundation is a registered charity dedicated to enhancing life skills in young people through sport. We provide a support network for young people by harnessing the power of positive sporting role models. The Mintridge Foundation assists young people of all ages, abilities, and physical capabilities to develop confidence and resilience, and creates awareness of the importance of mental and physical wellbeing through sport.

Our team of Ambassadors - Olympians, Paralympians and other professional sports stars from over 20 sports, both team and individual - work with young people in schools, clubs and academies across the UK. Starting with visits including assemblies, coaching clinics and classroom sessions tailored to each organisation’s requirements, our ambassadors can then provide one- on- one remote mentoring in a safeguarded environment, delivered via technology such as FitSwarm and Playwaze to build a lasting legacy for individuals.

The Mintridge Foundation’s successes demonstrate the incredible power of sport; from a mentee’s selection to represent Great Britain in their chosen field to enabling disabled children to find confidence and happiness just through participation. Understanding life after sport, we also support our Ambassadors in their transition from active sport to the next stage of their careers.
