Silver Mentoring Programme with George Furbank
A special Mintridge programme drew to a close last week and we
wanted to share a little more about it with our community; it certainly brought weekly smiles during a tough few months.
The Mulberry Homes Distinctly Local Campaign supports two local charities or organisations every month and throughout May, the Mintridge Foundation was incredibly grateful to be a chosen beneficiary. Thank
you very much to everyone involved for making this possible.
Young people have arguably been impacted the most during the COVID – 19 pandemic and therefore support from the Mintridge Foundation Ambassadors has been more important than ever. Without support such as the Distinctly Local campaign, it would be have been very difficult to reach as many young people during this time as schools and teachers have had to quickly adapt to a very
different learning environment.
Moulton School & Science College nominated two aspiring young rugby players from their Year 9 age group to be mentored by Northampton Saints & England Rugby
Full Back, George Furbank to be part of a five week programme, undertaken via Skype and Playwaze (with full safeguarding procedures in place). The students had live, one to one sessions with George each week.
Physical and mental wellbeing has never been more important in this challenging time and George focussed heavily on this during his sessions. Topics didn’t just cover life on the rugby pitch, there has definitely been a common theme throughout:
To do lists to help motivation
Structuring & routine for each day
Staying stimulated
Positively using free time
Reminding yourself what motivates you
An approachable role model like George, someone that has achieved so much and spending quality one on one time with his mentees has engaged his two mentees hugely and has given a very positive focus during lockdown life in the UK.
“My son loves his talks with George” said one of our mentees’ parents.
We are really excited to follow their progress over the coming months and once again, thank you very much to the Mulberry Homes team and Moulton school staff for enabling us to harness the
power of positive sporting role models, even from afar!
